Prospect New Orleans and Kara Walker announce the postponement of the presentation of Ms. Walker’s site-specific artwork for the exhibition, Prospect.4: The Lotus In Spite of the Swamp, opening on November 18, 2017 in New Orleans. The Kataswof Karavan will be presented and performed in February 2018 during the closing week of the Prospect 4 exhibition.
“I have been truly grateful for the opportunity to conceptualize and fabricate an ambitious artwork based in part, on the converging dark histories of Algiers Point,” said artist Kara Walker. “So much of what New Orleans has to offer as distillation of American themes is extremely compelling to me as an artist. I am happy to have the opportunity to stage the Kataswof Karavan in New Orleans in February.”
“Kara has broken new artistic ground and created a complex and potent work that hits on visual, sonic, intellectual and emotional levels,” said Prospect.4 Artistic Director Trevor Schoonmaker. “Kataswof Karavan has an important role to play at this time of social divide and racial tension because of its ability to generate real dialogue around these issues.”
“The scale and unprecedented complexity of staging the Kataswof Karavan on Algiers Point posed multiple challenges,” said Prospect New Orleans Interim Director Ylva Rouse. “We are happy that Kara Walker has given us the opportunity to present this important artwork that is deeply rooted in the history of our city during the exhibition’s closing festivities.“
Prospect.4: The Lotus in Spite of the Swamp will open to the public in New Orleans on November 18, 2017 and close February 25, 2018.
