New Orleans has always been a place that attracts artists from other parts of the country and world. That influx, which has continued—arguably under exceptional circumstances—in the last five years, is the topic of this exhibition. Fresh Off the Turnip Truck examines the work of accomplished young artists who are all, to a degree, recent arrivals in the city.  Justin Faunce is one of these artists.
“Pictophilia”/ 2007 / Acrylic on canvas

Artist statement:
I use painting to express visually the schematics of power and control in relationship to the individual and society.  They are my personal way of resisting the temptations of normalcy and the colonization of the individual mind by consumerist/authoritarian forces.  My themes include the effacement of reality by increasing virtuality, conceptions of transcendence, the brutality hidden beneath social conventions, alienation, the speed of information, and the nature of American ideals.

“Untitled Dolphins”

My paintings are inspired by reflections on everyday experiences, literature, and the internet.

As a process, my paintings are extremely time consuming and serve a meditative function in my life.
