New Orleans has always been a place that attracts artists from other parts of the country and world. That influx, which has continued—arguably under exceptional circumstances—in the last five years, is the topic of this exhibition. Fresh Off the Turnip Truck examines the work of accomplished young artists who are all, to a degree, recent arrivals in the city.  Matthew Kirscht is one of these artists.

My paintings deal with issues of mistrust, deceit, and unrealistic expectations.

I use storybook imagery and small scale to draw the viewer into a relationship with the work. Brightly colored, anthrpomorphic animals, fruits, and desserts welcome closer looks, but belie the unwholesome nature of the narrative. While characters in each individual painting tell a story, as a whole, the series of paintings encompasses a larger narrative recording the numbing effects of daily deceptions.  Still the characters persist as we do, constantly bombarded with manipulated information and disturbing actions.

Through these stories, I describe my discomfort with how easily we can succumb to manipulation and how we often assume malevolent roles to cope with our own feelings.
