PASCALE MARTHINE TAYOU (b. 1967, Yaounde, Cameroon) lives and works in Ghent, Brussels.
Through installations, drawings, films and performances, Pascale Marthine Tayou articulates the nomadic existence of his life, from his birth in Cameroon, to traveling throughout Europe, and his ceaseless journeying as an artist working internationally. His work is directly influenced by the drama that he witnesses on the street of the countries he travels through, and by the personal artifacts and ephemera he collects and incorporates in his works, from airline ticket stubs, to socks, razors and batteries. By recycling these items, Tayou confirms the fluidity of space, culture and thought and reminds us that our lives are inextricable linked with economics, migration and politics.
Tayou has participated in numerous group exhibitions around the world, including the 2005 Venice Biennale and Lyon Biennale; and the 2006 Istanbul Biennial. His work has been shown at the Kunshalle Wien, Vienna; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, Galleria Continua, Beijing; Hayward Gallery, London; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and most recently at the San Francisco Art Institute, CA.
