PIERRE ET GILLES - Pierre (b. 1949, La Roche sur-Yon, France), and Gilles (b. 1953, Le Havre, France) live and work in Paris.

Pierre et Gilles form a couple whose work is inseparable from their everyday life.  They create portraits of both celebrities and unknown friends in unique hand-painted photographs, through a particular collaborative process. They carefully select the costumes, make-up and hairdressing, in order to achieve an aesthetic perfection.  Theirs is a vision of an enchanted world populated by sailors and princes, saints and sinners, fairies and magic, all mixed together in a world of love and grace.

Coinciding with the publication of a new monograph of their work by Taschen, Pierre et Gilles celebrated a large retrospective at the Jeu de Paume, Paris in 2007. Recently they have shown in a touring exhibition in Russia (2007); La Force de l’Art at the Grand Palais, Paris (2006); a solo exhibition for the opening of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai (2004); a touring exhibition in Korea and Singapore (2004); and a solo exhibition at the Kunsthaus, Vienna (2002). They celebrated their first major U.S. exhibitions at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco in 2000.

Pierre et Gilles are represented by Galerie Jérôme de Noirmont in Paris.
