BEATRIZ MILHAZES (b. 1960, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.

Beatriz Milhazes is best known for her exquisite, colorful paintings full of references as diverse as folk art, carnival decorations, 1960s psychedelia, jewelry, embroidery, colonial baroque imagery, and high modernism.  Milhazes’ signature motifs include targets, concentric rings of small dots and flowers, and stylized abstractions. She has been diversifying her art practice through an exploration of prints, collages, and design sets. Most recently she has developed site-specific installations in both the public and private sphere.

Milhazes has shown her work at the Shanghai Biennial (2006); the Art Museum of the University of Houston, TX (2005); the Venice Biennale (2004); the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2002); and the Tate Liverpool (2001). Recent projects include a large-scale mural project for the Taschen Store in New York; the stage sets for Marcia Milhazes Contemporary Dance Company’s Tempo de Verão; and the Gloucester Road Tube Station in London.

Milhazes is represented by James Cohan Gallery in New York, Max Hetzler in Berlin, Stephen Friedman in London, and Fortes Vilaça in São Paolo.
