CHEN CHIEH-JEN (b. 1960, Taoyuan, Taiwan) lives and works in Taipei.

Chen Chieh-Jen took up video art in 2002 after nearly twenty years of working in photography, installation and performance.  His earlier works were built on historical images of pre-colonial and colonial warfare, and torture from China and Taiwan. In his more recent work, which is always without sound, he has taken on the phenomenon of globalization and explored its negative effects on his country’s industry.

Chen has exhibited extensively in Asia, including at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (1998); in Europe, at De Hallen Museum, Haarlem, the Netherlands (2006); and Musée di Jeu de Paume, Paris (2001); in the U.S. at the Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles; and the Asia Society, New York (2007). He has also participated in several important group shows including the São Paulo Biennial, the Venice Biennale, the Liverpool Biennial, the Biennale of Sydney, the Gwangju Biennial, and the Istanbul Biennial. Upcoming projects include a retrospective at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid.

Chen is represented by Main Trend Gallery in Taipei, and La Fabrica Gallery in Madrid.
