CAO FEI (b. 1978, Guangzhou, China) lives and works in Beijing.

A new talent in the current generation of young Chinese artists, Cao Fei has amassed an incredible body of work in the past few years.  An accomplished filmmaker/video artist, Cao’s wide-ranging subjects include “cosplayers,” adolescent fans of Japanese animations and computer games who dress up and enact their favorite characters. Her moving images are showcased in often-complicated sculptural installations that incorporate her videos and photographs in theatrical settings. In her latest work she works through her avatar, “China Tracy,” creating an experimental utopian world for the 3D online virtual community of Second Life.

Cao’s recent exhibitions include Brave New Worlds, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; Laughing In A Foreign Language, The Hayward Gallery, London; the Istanbul Biennial (2007); the Venice Biennale (2007); the Lyon Biennial; China Power Station: Part 1, Serpentine Gallery, London; and China Power Station: Part II, Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Olso.

Cao Fei is represented by Lombard + Freid Projects in New York.
