CANDICE BREITZ (b. 1972, Johannesburg, South Africa) lives and works in Berlin.
Candice Breitz uses darkly humorous, often subversive tactics to strike out at stereotypes and visual conventions in popular culture. Using a variety of media including video, installation and photography, her elaborate installations often explore the relationship between pop stars and actors, and their awestruck fans.
Breitz has participated in many major exhibitions including the Johannesburg Biennal, the São Paulo Biennial, the Istanbul Biennial, the Gwangju Biennial, the Taipei Biennial, and the Venice Biennale. She has had solo exhibitions at the Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva; the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; FACT, Liverpool; De Appel Foundation, Amsterdam; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; and the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, among others. Her most recent solo exhibition opened at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humblebaek, Denmark in January 2008.
Breitz is represented by Yvon Lambert in New York, Francesca Kaufmann in Milan, and White Cube in London.
